WWKARMY
A performance by WWKA (Women With Kitchen Appliances)

Montréal, August 27, 2008. “Don’t take your wife for granted … Take her to a WWKA show!” is the acerbic, hilarious, impertinent—not unlike their army—invitation launched by Women With Kitchen Appliances for their very last WWKARMY performance, scheduled to take place at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal on September 7, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. as the closing event of The Québec Triennial.

For this occasion, twenty-five women will don the WWKA uniform, something straight out of the 1950s—rubber gloves, identical wigs and dresses—and, with the utmost seriousness, play on … kitchen appliances! You have to be there to hear the amazing range of sounds they coax out of a hand mixer, coffee grinder, oven grill, food processor, and more, and to see the dazzling choreography they put together. A culinary treat for the eye and ear.

Since WWKA was founded in 1999, more than a dozen artists have taken part in the collective’s projects. Their work has been presented in a number of Canadian, American and European cities. Appearing three or four at a time, anonymous and interchangeable, they perform on various stages: radio, television, lofts, galleries, bars, festivals, cooking and home economics classrooms, restaurants and people’s homes. “They dream of setting up international WWKA cells and travelling to all the kitchens of the world,” enthuses Louise Simard, multimedia event organizer and coordinator of the WWKARMY presentation, which she describes as “a most unusual performance in tribute to women.”

This will be a chance to pay a final visit to the exhibition Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed. The Québec Triennial, which concludes that very Sunday, September 7. The Québec Triennial, it should be recalled, brings together 38 artists and collectives, and 135 works in one of the most ambitious exhibitions ever of contemporary Québec art, and the largest exhibition in the museum’s history.

The Musée d'art contemporain is a provincially owned corporation funded by the Ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition fémininedu Québec. It receives additional funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Canada Council for the Arts.
